How can we prepare young people for a world in which climate change and migration are becoming increasingly interconnected?
This question was at the heart of the KlimEd project’s field research conducted in Istria during June 2026.
Dr Mirela Holy, Principal Investigator of the research project Climate Migration in Education: Innovative Educational Media for Understanding Intersectional Crises (KlimEd), together with Dr Marija Geiger Zeman from the Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar, visited secondary schools in Buje, Umag, Rovinj, Pula and Pazin. In addition to conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews with teachers, they met with headteachers and other education professionals to discuss opportunities for schools to participate in the project’s activities.
During these meetings, the KlimEd project was presented as an initiative exploring how the topics of climate change, migration and climate migration can be more effectively integrated into secondary education and brought closer to young people through innovative educational media and interactive learning resources. The project places particular emphasis on understanding climate migration as a complex social, environmental and ethical issue that will be one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century.
The participating schools were invited to collaborate through interviews, questionnaire-based research and workshops that will be carried out during 2027 and 2028. The shared objective is to develop educational approaches that foster critical thinking, empathy and a deeper understanding of global challenges among young people.
